Abstract In this paper, a new method called Bayesian network (BN) is used to assess the reliability of automotive transmission, which is one of the most important assemblies of a car that includes many components. A BN model of automotive transmission reliability is built and its reliability is calculated. It can be seen that the reliability assessment based on BN is relatively simple and the dependencies between components can be considered too. It proves the validity and superiority of BN in the application of the reliability analysis and assessment and the results are meaningful for practical engineering.
