Abstract A probabilistic analysis method of sample size determination to estimate fatigue life in reliability test of mechanical products is presented. The proposed method is used to determine the minimum sample size, whereas the estimation of fatigue life keeps a given precision index, reliability (probability of survival) and confidence level. In general, the data of fatigue life of mechanical product follows Weibull distribution. The relationship between size of sample, estimation precision index, confidence level and fatigue life parameters of Weibull distribution is derived in this paper. The method is proved to be accurate and feasible by some calculation examples. Besides practical experiences, it allows engineers to find a good compromise between the accuracy of the fatigue life estimation and the cost of the tests when they need to determine the sample size.
