Abstract This paper supposes that an operating unit works for successive procedures with random cycle times, and each procedure incurs some variable damage and takes up two replacement models where preventive replacement for an operating unit is delayed at the end of the operating and forthcoming procedures, which are called over planned time T replacement and over damage level Z replacement. Comparisons of overtime policy and its standard age-based replacement, overlevel policy and its standard condition-based replacement are made to determine which is better from the point of replacement cost rate. Furthermore, modified overtime and overlevel replacement costs are obtained to specify a critical point when these two policies would be adopted rather than their standard replacements.
