Abstract An electronic product usually contains numerous electronic components. To improve market competitiveness and operational flexibility, outsourcing electronic components has become a trending business model in the electronics industry. To ensure that the lifetimes of procured electronic components meet market needs, this study proposes a lifetime-based fuzzy supplier selection model. This model is based on the confidence interval of the lifetime performance index proposed by Chen and Yu. Under the assumption that the lifetime of an electronic component follows an exponential distribution, we derive the confidence intervals of the life time performance index for each supplier and use confidence interval of various suppliers to construct a fuzzy membership function. We propose a fuzzy supplier selection model based on this function; this fuzzy supplier selection model can be used to identify good suppliers. The fuzzy test incorporates historical data and expert experience to maintain evaluation accuracy in the cases of small sample size.
