Abstract A consecutive-k-out-of-n:G system consists of n components which are arranged in a line or a circle and the system works if and only if at least k consecutive components work. This paper proposes a periodic inspection policy for this system. Since the system failure occurs when the set of working components with number k or more does not exist, a specified condition where system approaching failure is defined. We assume that all components have independent and identically exponential lifetime distribution, and when each inspection interval is done, each component state will be checked. The expected time to this specified condition is firstly derived. Then the system will be maintained at the next inspection interval or the time of system failure, whichever occurs first. The expected total inspection cost in one renewal cycle is also derived.
