Abstract In this paper, a calendar-time-based maintenance policy is considered, in which a system is repaired at failures during the time interval [0, L], and is replaced at the calendar time L+I or at the first failure after time L, whichever happens first. The repair type is supposed to be minimal repair and the repair time is a random variable. We derive the long-run average cost rate of the system and obtain the optimal L* and I* numerically
