Abstract This work studies four replacement policies, including age replacement policy, replacement first policy, replacement last policy and replacement next policy, for a system based on the one-cycle criterion. The system is subject to shocks which occurs according to a non-homogeneous pure birth process. Whenever a shock arrives, the system is either minimal repair (type I failure) or replaced by new one (type II failure). The occurrence of the failure type depends on the number of shocks that have occurred since the last replacement. All mathematical models for four replacement policies are formulated and the optimal schedules are discussed analytically and numerically.
