Abstract For age replacement policies, we usually use the renewal reward theorem to formulate the expected cost rate models. However, it has been shown in literatures that this kind of modeling cannot solve the models when the failure time has an exponential distribution. Not only that, in our opinion, optimal replacement times are expected values so that we cannot prevent failures perfectly. In addition, we sometimes find it is difficult to estimate all kinds of costs for replacement policies. From the above viewpoints, it would be successful to minimize the mean deviation between planned replacement and random failures, leaving the many assumptions behind and make the replacement plans in reasonable ways.
