Abstract This study designs an intuitionistic type-II fuzzy inference system (FIS) to deal with prioritize failures problem based on failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). This study utilizes the advantages of intuitionistic fuzzy set and type-II fuzzy inference system, which have been proven to be most effective in uncertain environment, to prioritize failures problem. The measurement of manager’s judgments is difficult and vague in cigarette filter process. In the study, triangular fuzzy numbers (TFS) are used to represent uncertain data for probability, severity, and detection. Intuitionistic type-II is employed to model vaguely defined relations between TFS. The cigarette filter process example is used to verify the intuitionistic type-II could effectively estimate the results of prioritize failures problem in cigarette filter process, and provide more objective estimated value.
