Abstract We consider three models with independent damage and failure level which declines with some heavy damages. (i) The unit is replaced at Mth time of damage Z, at damage K, or at time T, whichever occurs first. (ii) The unit is replaced at Mth time of damage Z, damage K or shock N, whichever occurs first. (iii) The unit is replaced at Mth time of damage Z, damage K, shock N or at time, whichever occurs first. We discuss analytically about optimal T* and N* which minimize the expected cost rates.
