Abstract This paper studies opportunity-based age replacement policies for a parallel system. The expected cost rates
for the age replacement, replacement first, and replacement last models are derived, respectively. The optimal preventive replacement time and the optimal number of units are obtained by minimizing these expected cost rates. Furthermore, we formulate the optimal preventive replacement policies when the number of system units is a random variable following a Poisson distribution. The corresponding optimal preventive replacement policies for each model are then proposed.
