Abstract This paper proposes periodic incremental backup policies for database systems with random update failures, where database failure occurs with a constant probability at each data update epoch. Incremental backups (either differential or cumulative) are performed immediately after each update, and full backups are performed periodically at discrete times KT. Using the theory of cumulative processes, we derive the expected cost rates for both differential and cumulative backup schemes, and analytically obtain the unique optimal K*D for differential backup and K*C for cumulative backup that minimize the corresponding cost rates. Finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the optimal policies and analyze the impact of system parameters on the optimal policies.
