Modification of Target Failure Measures for Functional Safety Assessment of E/E/Pe Safety-Related Software

Abstract Software target failure measures which has been proposed so far for assessing the functional safety of
E/E/PE safety-related software do not fully consider the software failure occurrence mechanism. Generally,
the hazard rate or probability of software failure occurrence essentially depends on the actual operating time
of the software during their operation time-duration because software failures occur only when software logical paths containing software bugs are executed. We propose modified software target failure measures by considering the actual working time of the E/E/PE safety-related software during operation. Numerical
examples of our modified target failure measures show how they differ from our previous measures in terms of the results of software functional safety assessment and testing time duration required to satisfy certain safety integrity level defined by IEC 61508.
