Abstract A renewal function is one of most important reliability measures and represents the expected number of failures during the interval [0, t]. However, it is quite difficult to compute explicitly a renewal function M(t) of Weibull distribution, because it has no reproductive property. First, we show reliability measures of mean, median and mode of Weibull distribution, obtain them when they are equal to each other, and compute M(t), using the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) method. Next, taking up gamma, normal and modified Weibull distributions, we propose computing procedures of a renewal function. It is shown numerically that these approximations are easy and give good ones for obtaining M(t).
