Maintenance Problem of a Two-Phase Warranted Product with Decision of an Extended Warranty Period

Abstract We consider an optimal maintenance problem for a customer of a product with a base and extended
warranties provided by a manufacturer. Under a base warranty, the warranty period is divided into two nonoverlapping subintervals that a product is replaced, and the base warranty is renewed in the former interval, which is called a replacement warranty length, and it is minimally repaired in the latter interval, upon occurrence of failures. After expiration of the base warranty, the customer of the product can contract an extended warranty with charge and decide the optimal length of the extended warranty. Following expiration of the extended warranty, the customer has to operate and maintain the product without help of the manufacturer under a block replacement policy with minimal repair. We construct a cost model which finds optimal lengths for an extended warranty and a preventive replacement. For the cost model, we analyze the optimal block replacement policy with warranty through numerical analysis and investigate the relationships
between the optimal lengths for the extended warranty and the preventive replacement.
