Abstract | This paper explores the optimal preventive replacement policy for a repairable product with multiple repair attempts under free-repair warranty (FRW). Specifically, under the FRW policy provided with a particular warranty period, a repairable product undergoes preventive replacement at periodic times. In case of unexpected failure during two successive replacement cycles, repairs will be made to rectify the failures, free of charge to the customer during the warranty period. Taking the practical factor that a repair is imperfect due to various reasons, the effect of a repair may be successful but worse than minimal repair or unsuccessful. The optimal preventive replacement cycles for the situations whether the product is provided with or without a warranty in minimizing the expected cost rates are respectively analyzed and compared analytically. Finally, detailed numerical examples and computation results are addressed to illustrate the conclusion that the preventive replacement policy for the product with a FRW is more cost-effective than the case without a warranty.
