Abstract Non-destructive test (NDT) assesses the unit's serviceability without permanent damage, or uses an indicator to reflect the property of the unit. In contrast, destructive test (DT) is performed and the unit is discarded after the test. In this paper, we investigate a system composed of non-identical units with different characteristics and subjected to hybrid reliability tests which utilize both NDTs and DTs. We study the reliability of such a system, and optimally design the sequential hybrid test based on sampling. Moreover, the parameter of the unit's lifetime distribution is updated based on the test results and is adopted for the design of the optimal sequential test design.
