On the Shape of Failure Rate Curve and Influencing Factors

Abstract System failure rate curves present on different shapes determined by system configuration, the underlying failure mechanism and stress-strength relationship of the components. Through multi-dimensional stress – degrading strength interference analysis technique, many kinds of possible failure rate curves are produced for series system, parallel system, and k-out-of-n redundant system. Furthermore, the effects of stress, strength, and failure mechanism on failure rate curve shape are discussed.
