Abstract This paper presents results related to the fill rate, an important measure of supply chain performance ensuring that a customer's service is met with maximum reliability. These results will mainly concentrate on its variability, an aspect which is largely ignored in the literature on fill rate. Related results concerning consistency and asymptotic normality extend the range of application of the fill rate in evaluating reliability and in determining the optimal stock level of a supply chain.
