Abstract This paper presents a simple approach to rationally allocate means and tolerances to both provide quality and the associated cost in engineering systems. The novelty of the approach resides in the use of variance decomposition methods to provide variance information of multiple responses from full distributions of the design variables. The impact of the method is that it reinforces concepts from 6-σ design. Both cost and quality policies may serve as objectives and constraints in the optimization process.
