Abstract We consider optimal replacement policies with ran- dom preventive maintenance, random working time or nite operating interval. For the models, we obtain the expected cost, and derive analytically optimal planned preventive maintenance time and number N (N = 0; 1; 2; : : : ) of working time which minimize the expected cost. Further, numerical examples are given when the failure distribution is a Weibull distribution, and the other time distributions are exponential distributions.
