Abstract Several open source software are used in area of embedded software. Also, the installer software developed under the third-party developers are installed to several embedded software. In this situation, it is difficult to assess the software reliability, because the internal structure of software changes with the installed software. In this paper, we propose the method of reliability assessment considering the environment of mobile clouds. Moreover, we formulate the total expected software cost considering the operating environment of mobile clouds. Then, we discuss the optimum software release problem with performability as the reliability requirement. Moreover, we show several numerical examples for reliability assessment by using actual data. Furthermore, we show numerical illustrations of optimum release time considering the performability as the reliability requirement.
