Abstract The method presented here serves to determine the transfer factor between two design stages during development. The value of the transfer factor is substantiated by including the weighted influence of different design parameters on the desired output parameter, e.g. lifetime. The design parameters are grouped in categories known from the cause-and-effect method. Thanks to the visualization of the parameters’ deviations in each category, the maturity of the product is more easily assessed at the given design stage. Furthermore, the thus yielded quantitative degree of similarity is represented by a transfer factor as is applied in the Bayes’ Theorem aiding to reduce sample sizes thanks to pre-knowledge. The pre-knowledge can stem from simulation results as well as test data.
