Abstract Heavy-load spiral bevel gears are prone to root fatigue fracture with severe working condition of high speed, heavy load. This paper puts forward an estimating model for the bending fatigue life of heavy-load spiral bevel gear, which divides gear fatigue process into stages of tooth root crack initiation and crack propagation. Calculate crack initiation life with the fe-safe software based on local stress-strain method and calculate crack propagation life with by FRANC3D software based on linear elastic fracture mechanics method. The sum of both could decide the bending fatigue life.
