Abstract A parallel redundant system plays an important role in reliability theory. This paper discusses age and random replacement policies for a parallel system by introducing shortage and excess costs to satisfy job schedules with random working and processing times, and two cases when the number of units are a constant n and a variable N are considered for respective replacements. Expected costs and their cost rates are derived, and optimal policies are discussed analytically and computed numerically.
