Abstract The identification and evaluation of critical components are important for the safety of complex aircraft systems. This paper proposes a critical component identification model for complex systems combining the fuzzy evaluation method and the DEMATEL-ISM algorithm. The process based on the model is described in detail, which calculates the Prominence and the Relation of each component and constructs the system structure model. The software of critical component identification for complex systems is developed, with advantages over simple operation and good user interactivity. The validation of the algorithm is carried out with the case of the more electric aircraft starter generator system, and the results show that the algorithm proposed is feasible and the software is effective. The proposed model and the developed software can provide an effective solution for the safety analysis and critical component identification of complex systems.
