Abstract In this paper, an order-replacement policy for a deteriorating and repairable system is studied. Taking the fact that the successive working times of the system become shorter and shorter while its consecutive maintenance times become longer and longer into consideration, a general α-series process which is the generalization of the α-series process is proposed to depict the characteristics. The order-replacement policy is associated with the number of system failures N, in which a spare part for replacement is ordered at the completion of the (N-1)th repair and the system is replaced at the Nth failure if available. To achieve a tradeoff between a low maintenance expenditure and a restricted quality demand, a constrained optimization problem framework with minimizing average cost rate under constrained system availability is constructed.
