Abstract A cost-optimal intelligent maintenance optimization approach for multi-unit device based on iteratively updated group information is investigated. Unlike previous studies that ignore maintenance opportunities from component failure or preventive intervention, this study innovatively establishes a united preventive-opportunistic group maintenance model that is able to capture both opportunities. The framework inherits the advantages of quick-responding, adaptive replacement decisionmakings, which transfers long-term maintenance schedule into a combination of multiple short-term maintenance grouping, which significantly enhances the operational availability and profitability. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm.
