Abstract We propose optimal scheme models with two kinds of errors for computer systems. A high-reliability computer system needs to be backed up in case of computer system crashes due to hardware failures and malicious software infections. This model aims to determine suitable backup times for a computer system which be processed constant and random tasks. Making backups take a long time and cannot be done frequently. But if we don't take a backup for a long time, we lose more data files. We propose suitable backup timing for a computer system which has two types of error, obtain the mean execution times until the process succeeds, and discuss optimal policies analytically and numerically which minimize the execution times. This model provides a solution to balancing backup frequency and data loss in high-reliability computer systems.
